I got a chance to hear Gayl Murphy speak not long ago – a wonderful speaker! If you get a chance to hear her, you should. She’s a Hollywood reporter who is a whiz on PR and gaining media attention for yourself and your business. Anyway, Gayl made some excellent points, but one of them that really stuck with me was this one:
The MEDIA is any person or entity that can move your message forward.
Think about that. Every lunch date is a media opportunity of sorts. Every time you get to share your story with someone new, it’s a media opportunity because that person can MOVE YOUR MESSAGE FORWARD.
And if you think about your business networking this way, you’ll do it differently. You’re not selling every new person you meet, on your product or service. Every new person you meet does not need or want your product or service. It’s your MESSAGE that is key. What is it about you or your business that’s worth repeating to others?
CASE ONE: Your new acquaintance leaves a coffee date with you, headed to her leads group. And when she gets there she says, “I just met the most fascinating woman, you guys have to meet her. She’s so fun and interesting, and she has a marketing research business that is doing some really interesting things.”
CASE TWO: Your new acquaintance goes to her leads group and they say, “Where have you been?” and she says, “Oh, I was at a coffee meeting, with a friend of my friend Vivian’s.” “Well, who is this woman, what does she do?” the leads-group people ask. “She does marketing research, and I got an earful, but don’t ask me to repeat any of it because I can’t remember.”
You do not network, in order to sell. You network in order to create relationships. One bit of low-hanging fruit in a new networking relationship is that when people are interested in you, and find you fun or fascinating or interested in THEM and a good listener, their thoughts will turn to you more often. They’ll tell people about you. That’s the minor media referenced in the title of this article. Don’t lose your marketing opportunities, trying to turn every conversation into a sale!
