For my local search needs my go-to tool nowadays is Microsoft Live Search Mobile for my Windows Mobile Phone. For looking up things like the nearest pizza place, or the address of the restaurant where I’m meeting people, it can’t be beat. Even if there’s an available computer in the house, I still reach for MS Live Search first.
Up to now, I’ve nearly always viewed mobile applications as inferior alternatives to their full blown computer-based brethren. But this one is different. MS Live Search is so handy, that you really can’t live without it after you’ve been using it for a while.
And I’ve used Google Maps Mobile too; it just doesn’t compare to ‘ol Microsoft with this one.
Some of MS Live Search Mobile’s great features:
Easy, user friendly navigation – Finding a city, or a business category is easy. Most everything is pre-categorized, easy to read, and easy to find.
Results are very legible and easy to take action with – Results show up clearly and I can easily text an adddress to a friend, dial the number of a business, see it on a map, or get directions. And the directions are great–for each step in the directions I can see a separate map showing showing me exactly where I should be.
Live Search runs on Java and Windows Mobile phones, with a Blackberry version in beta.
