With the merger of AT&T (SBC) and BellSouth recently some consumer groups wonder if we’ll soon have a two-tiered duopoly composed of the local telco provider, and the local cable provider. My feeling: don’t pull the alarm lever just yet. Very long term it’s possible something would have to be done to preserver competition, but not yet. There may be an interim time where a consumer’s only choice will be either the cable or phone company, but not too far down the road these companies should be competing against mobile carriers and future WiMax providers to offers consumers broadband internet access.
