Seth Godin, author of the bestsellers Purple Cow, Permission Marketing and Unleashing the Ideavirus, among others, has just come out with a new book called ‘Free Prize Inside!’. Question: Seth, I understand the concept of a free prize, your book was great at making the idea clear, but what is a good way to determine the difference between a free prize and a gimmick? It seems it would be possible that a business owner might think he or she has created a free prize when actually it is a gimmick, with all of its negative connotations.
Answer: There really is not a perfect way to tell the difference. Sometimes, of course, it’s obvious and you and others gasp with delight and recognition. Other times, you just don’t know. I think if it was easy and certain, everyone would do it. Hence the art.
