The items I want to share with you are building up again. Here is a nice mix of interesting stuff.
First, a couple podcasts:
Now the posts:
Don has been on a RANT about the leadership failures of the hurricane response.
Steve Rubel tells us about the guy who got fired for eating pizza left over from a meeting. The guy claims he got fired because of this, but I just gotta wonder…. Can any company be that stupid? Can any HR person worth their salt let that kind of dumbness happen. I think there is more to it – not one HR person I know would have fired a guy for eating someones pizza.
And I love this piece by Management Issues called, Management: Just a hoax? I have to quote this one:
"Picking up on research last week which found that ‘management’ just interferes with our ability to do our work properly and that most workers do their best work when managers get out of the way, Simon Caulkin delivered this great piece in Sunday’s Observer systematically debunking management-speak as the drivel that it so often is."
Of course you and I know that when the Directors and VPs are away at conferences, everything goes MUCH smoother. Fewer idiotic meetings, fewer idiotic questions, and you are less likely to be diverted 20 times per day. For those of you who are Directors and VP, you might try acting like your are not there and see how much your staff gets done! Of course, you know it is true because when your boss is away, the same goes for your productivity.
Traditional managers can be nothing but an interference, and are, in the very worst and very best organizations. Don’t despair, dear Management Craft readers, I am not saying that management, and ergo this blog, is a waste.
It CAN be an interference…..
It is OFTEN an interference…
But of course a great manager is worth his or her weight in fine chocolate (I put the value of chocolate over platinum).
And thanks to several billionaires, including the always entertaining Richard Branson, they are beginning to plan the Spaceport in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Can you imagine this start-up? Can you image the type of people who will be clamoring to work there? I would come out of self-employment to be in charge of building that organization! What would the employee discount look like?
