This article cites an eBay study that claims:
More than 50 unused items worth about $3,000 are lying around the average American household..
There you go — if you want make a quick 3 grand, just clean that basement! Seriously, just about any household has items that are not being used. Every year, I’m amazed at how many items fail the ‘1 Year Test’ when we do our spring cleaning. The 1 year test means that if you haven’t touched the item (or box of items) in a period of a year, you probably don’t need it. And the items might be better off in someone else’s home who can use them.
For many of us, unneeded items include furniture and other heavy items. If you have those kinds of items you don’t need, don’t forget CraigsList! It’s the place for selling locally and you can attract people from your local area who can arrange their own pickup.
For anything that’s shippable, use eBay to move it out. If you want to get started on eBay, there is usually no better place to start than around your own house. Even experienced eBay sellers use it as an alternate to yard sales. Spring is officially over in a couple of weeks so if you haven’t gotten around to that Spring Cleaning yet, maybe you can be motivated by money?
