Recently the Chicago addition of Restaurants and Institutions reported that McDonalds Corporation is allowing a select group of housewives into their facilities to both observe and then blog about what they see.
It seems that many housewives are concerned that the food at McDonalds is not freshly prepared to order and they want concerned moms to see for themselves what a great job they are doing.
Having helped develop product for fast food application, I know first hand that not only does a lot of research go into the engineering of these products, but that large companies such as McDonalds find themselves in a double bind of sorts.
I am positive that these bloging McMom’s will find McDonalds more than accommodating to their needs. In fact I am willing to bet that absolutely everything will be prepared as freshly as possible. I am also sure that the staff at these sites will take care to be extra clean and everything will be in tip top shape.
Let’s not forget that the McDonalds Corporation has enough collective power by this point, with their billions in annual revenue, to virtually shape government policy. They buy food in bulk from the far corners of the world and it is because of McDonalds influence on some local economies that they survive at all.
The problem is that although everything might be made fresh on the spot, you are still dealing with genetically engineered corn based products, not to mention ground beef that has been summarily patched together from all over the globe.
I actually have nothing against McDonald’s, it is not their fault that the entire human race suddenly wants to get healthy and save the planet. Hell, only five years ago no one could have cared less.
All I know is that there is very big money in feeding the masses, and McDonalds will do what it can, short of an offer you can’t refuse, to assure that their image is clean. So these mom’s will come in, observe, maybe make a few complaints to make things look good and that will be it. Rest assured that every prospective mom has been carefully screened and given the once over for both credibility and sensibility. The lawyers and executive’s at McDonalds are not fools, so do not expect these moms to make fools out of them.
In the long run,the only way fast food is going to change, is if it becomes slow food. We all know that this will never happen, regardless of al the marketing ploys.
Hell, if you were to check the corporate records of a company like McDonalds you might even be surprised to find that either they own stock in Monsanto or Monsanto owns stock in them.
After writing this I hope a black sedan driven by a funny looking clown doesn’t start following me around.
