I’m in a writing vibe this weekend. I have been reading Natalie Goldberg´s Writing Down the Bones (thanks to Evelyn for the recommendation). Wild Mind is next on my list. So far, it’s been very helpful and inspiring.
I feel like my writing has improved a lot in the last year. I credit my improvement to:
1. Writing more. Books, e-books, articles, and over 300 blog posts. I figure I have written about 250,000 words in the last 7 months.
2. Experiencing being edited. For most of my business career, I have not been edited by anyone who knew anything about writing. In the past year I have learned from several great editors including my husband Bill, my publisher, and Stylewriter. I have learned the most from Stylewriter, which is a great editing program from the UK (it edits US English). The program is the best I have found by far. In fact, I almost didn´t switch to Mac because it does not come in a Mac version. Instead, I have my old PC set up next to my ibook and I just us the PC to run my writing through Stylewriter. It works within WORD. I love the program so much. I even asked them if I could someway help them create a Mac version. They apparently are coming out with a web version in a few months that will work with Mac. I can´t wait. This program has changed my writing and it has lots of scores and indicators to show how your work improves as you edit.
3. Being in the writing mindset. Whether through books or writing conferences, I find it helpful to be in the writing conversation.
Anyway, I NEED to be all vibbed out with writing because I have lots to write! I have several projects I am working on including:
More Space – Yep, that´s back on track. We lost our editor because he was too busy, and this slowed down the progress. But now we are back on track and blazing down toward having the book complete in the June/July timeframe. As a reminder, More Space is a book of 11 chapters. Each chapter is an essay written by business blogger. The essay topics range from productivity to passion. I am pleased as punch (where did that saying come from?) to be one of the essayists. My chapter is about breakthrough experiences. Todd Sattersten (A Penny For and 1800CEOREAD) is our leader and recently did a podcast about the project. You can take a listen here.
Contagious Success – I interviewed Susan Annunzio on Friday and will have 3 or 4 posts about this amazing piece of work. For those of you thinking that the buzz about this book was hoppin´ a couple months ago, that´s right. But I have some fresh information that I hope you will find interesting. More on this coming soon.
Organization Development Basics – Confession: I am way behind on where I need to be with this book and it´s all mental. The completed manuscript is due mid May. There´s something about writing a primer on OD that has me a bit on edge. OD people can be pretty weird about their theories and definitions. Honestly, I take a more liberal and relaxed view. So my mental struggles have been between whether to write a clinical version of the discipline or Lisa´s version. Of course, it will have both, but the struggle to decide the balance has slowed me down.
Chile Pepper High – This is my travelogue about New Mexico. I need to write a representative sample chapter to attract a publisher. This is a totally different kind of writing, so I have been playing around with a more narrative approach. As a self-proclaimed Bullet Queen, this is both a challenge and fun.
Article Queries – I have a dozen or so article queries out there for magazine articles. Most notably, I just finished a query for the article on R. Carlos Nakai and the Native American Flute. I am interviewing him in a few weeks.
OK, time to continue the vibe and get working on one of these projects. Later!
