While on vacation, I have discovered a joy that I have not experienced in a long, long time. No, it´s not chocolate, since I eat that about everyday. And yes, that Key Lime pie was awesome, but I can get that anytime. In fact, my discovery has nothing to do with food at all.
The joy to which I´m referring is that of the everyday nap. You know, when you crawl into bed in the middle of the day, shut your eyes, and fall fast asleep.
We should have naptime in our country. A part of the day when companies shut down and employees rest. Lights Out, we could call it. Employees could bring their favorite blankies and sleep mats, plop them down on the office floor, and snooze for a bit. I bet productivity would soar. Tensions would lessen. And our country would be much more well-rested than we are now.
After a nice nap, I wake up feeling refreshed. I can jump to work: get on the computer, make some calls, and sound as though I know what I´m talking about. Or I can play with my daughter without getting upset when she throws her toys or chases the cat with the plastic baseball bat.
Sleep is such an important part of our life, and yet many of us do not get the rest that we need. We stay up late to tackle last minute cleaning and we rise early each morning so that we can start the day before the sun has even risen.
So if you haven´t had a nap in a while, promise me that you will try one this weekend. Just tell the rest of your family that you need a little quiet time. Shut your bedroom door. Turn off the lights. And sleep.
Really, you´ll thank me when you finally open your eyes.
