Principle and Practice #9: Creativity-Play with Possibilities
Much to my surprise, I once had an executive coaching client
tell me that her company had beaten the creativity out of her. As a leader,
part of your job is to tap into and nurture the imagination of your staff. On a
scale of 1-10, how do you feel you are you doing?
Playing with possibilities and being creative is the
foundation for new products, services, marketing schemes and problem solving. Without
a solid creative spark, half of what we see on daily basis may not have ever
come into existence. Even though a solid work ethic can carry you through most
projects, it is that small glimmer of raw, untapped imagination that is origin
of mostly everything that is done in the business world. Here are five ways you can do a better job leading your team
1. Provide a dedicated time
each week or each month to brainstorming
2. Be open to trying the ideas
of your staff, even if you think your ideas are better
3. Listen to ideas and think
about them for a day or more before your critique them
4. Find out how each of your
team members is inspired to be imaginative and support them in developing this
in within them.
5. Do something surprisingly
creative each quarter that will inspire and excite your team
Leader Activity:1. Make a list of 5 off the
wall ideas for how you can encourage your team to be more creative.
2. Make a list of 5 ways you
could become more creative.
3. Share your lists with the
team and have them choose 2 ideas from each list that you will implement.
Team Activity:1. Brainstorm 100 ideas for
improving service, products, profitability and efficiency (or other criteria
developed by team)
2. Choose 4 to implement in
the next 30-90 days and develop a project plan
3. Vote and give prizes for:
Most ideas generated
Most outrageous idea
Least expensive idea
Most expensive idea
