I saw Keith Ferrazzi speak today at the Microsoft Small Business Summit here in Bellevue. He was great – open, interesting, funny, and with a bit of Al Pacino dark side (love the dark side). He highlighted many points in his book, Never Eat Alone, and made them come to life.
Two, in particular, spoke to me.
1. Business relationships are personal. Get intimate. Quickly discover people’s passions and give them an invitation to open up. Respect the relationship by being willing to open up yourself. You won’t be trusted if you don’t open up.
2. Creating connections means being generous – with your time, support, and connections. He reminded us of the power of helping others succeed. It’s immense. Keith walks his talk on this one. He was generous enough to write the Foreword to my upcoming book, Focus Like a Laser Beam.
My key take-away is a renewed motivation to live it up – show my colors, be my true and animated self. I CAN be a professional who is also a bit zany and unconventional. I can, should, and owe it to the people I care about to have fun and get personal. I have struggled all my professional life with curtailing who I really am in order to fit into the certain business cultures. I am sure many of you have done the same thing. Thanks for the nudge and for being an excellent role model Keith!
If you haven’t already picked up a copy of Never Eat Alone, do so. Check out his blog and register for his free newsletter at his website. And if you would like to hear the same talk I saw today – it will be up on the Small Business Summit website for viewing.
I was a Z, by the way…..quite embarrassed by that….but then not really.
Thanks to Microsoft for providing the opportunity to see Keith live, in person, and for free. Sure, they pitched some software, but they also provided a great value so the pitching was OK. They still have many webinars associated with the Small Business Summit that you can view free, so check it out.
Another hot tip (totally unrelated) I got from someone at my table that I will share:
