Jan Brewer probably won’t be eating out soon – or ever again in Arizona. For all those who don’t know, Brewer is the Governor of Arizona and has recently laid claim to signing the tough immigration legislation into law last Friday.
The new law is the strictest immigration standards in decades. Basically, anyone suspected of being in the country illegally can be stopped, retained and questioned. Failure to carry immigration documents is now a crime in Arizona.
Opponents of the law, of which there are many, are attempting to have the legislation overturned. However, by the time that occurs, half the kitchen employees in Scottsdale could soon be back in their country of origin.
Numerous people are calling for numerous measures. Some people want to boycott Arizona and all the products that are made there. Unfortunately, the popularity of Arizona is not soaring of late. On top of the new legislation, can anyone name anything that comes from Arizona? Flagstone is popular. Crushed granite stabilizer is also something that crosses the state line. But for the most part, Arizona appears to be self-contained — hence the immigration law.
For restaurant owners the law will cause a huge amount of hurt. It’s a busy Friday night. You’re two kitchen employees down and your chef is on his way. He is running late because his son had a doctor’s appointment. While speeding to work he is stopped, and because he is a citizen and has no papers, he is detained until Saturday morning. How was your night?
There probably isn’t too much the state restaurant association can do, now. He law is the law. But in the meantime, you can retaliate.
Why not put the good Gov’s picture in your lobby, in the bathroom, and of course, in the kitchen? Make sure that everyone in your employ knows what she looks like. Make sure everyone is alerted when she has the guts to show her face in an Arizona restaurant. Then, let the nature of the business takes its course.
Remember one other thing: Brewer comes from the same county as infamous Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. You might say they are goombahs in the world of immigration.
Maybe the sheriff’s picture should hang next to Brewer’s. And then both of these humanitarian politicians would have to eat home more often.
