One of the keys in garnering good press coverage is to not drop the ball on the follow-through in your queries to journalists. In life as in business, it’s all about the follow-through. That includes having patience and being responsive to journalists even if they didn’t cover that first press release you sent them or the story you thought would be “perfect” for their publication.
There are several issues a journalist has to confront including their own boss to get a story to print or in online form. Sometimes those issues are well after you’ve talked with them and may intercede or prevent your story from getting ink.
Being proactive in how you treat a journalist is key in getting a story covered. Don’t give up on a journalist at first swing, go back to homeplate and swing again.
Don’t hit heavy on the journalist, just don’t drop them out of your sights at first bat. Keep them apprised of your news and keep moving forward base to base and ultimately you’ll hit a home run with coverage!
