As winter sets in for the northern hemisphere, power outages are imminent in some areas. So far this fall (yes it is still technically fall), our neighborhood has endured no less than 4 power outages. Power outages can really bring your home-business to a halt.
What can you do? A notebook computer with a fully charged battery can be a good defense against power outages. If the power goes out while you’re working, the notebook computer will stay on (with reduced graphics). You might even consider purchasing a spare battery and charger to extend your backup power source in the event of a prolonged power outage. While you probably won’t be able to do such things as connect to the internet or print, you can at least get some work done.
Also, think about what kinds of other work you can accomplish while the power is out. Do you need to catch up on some filing? Do you need to straighten up your desk? Does your keyboard need cleaning? Perhaps there are things you don’t ordinarily think of that can be done while you wait for the power to come back on.
Then there’s always good old reading by candlelight or flashlight. Have a business book or two waiting to be read and use this time to catch up. If you’re looking for Business Book recommendations, check out Nettie Hartsock’s Must Read Business Books here at AllBusiness.
So if you find yourself in the dark, don’t fret. It may not be business as usual, but you can conduct some business with the right preparation.
