In a home based business or any business, you need a marketing strategy. Quite often part of a marketing strategy includes giving away free information. Sometimes this is in the form of an eMail newsletter, it might be a blog, an eBook, or something else. Using the example of an eBook, you might wonder why anyone would give away an eBook for free when they can sell it?
For one thing, people are far more likely to read (or watch) your information if you give it to them free versus charging them for it. Second, it isn’t really free even if you give it to them. Say what? OK — let’s say you’re giving away a 30 minute how-to video on something. The people who download it and/or view it aren’t really getting it for free. Each of them is going to have to set aside at least 30 minutes of their time to view the video and we all know that time is not free (as they say ‘time is money’). People tend to ignore this fact when taking advantage of free information offers.
Having said that however, make sure the information you offer for ‘free’ is worth the time you are asking people to devote to consuming the information. I can’t tell you how many ‘free’ eBooks I have stopped at page 6 because they were just junk information (then I sent them to the recycle bin). On the other hand, if you provide good free information that people find useful, you will build trust and can then perhaps later approach them to actually buy something (such as a subscription service or some other product).
There is a tendency with some folks to create free information that’s only junk information. Make your free information of value and you will find that people will be drawn to what you have to say and will welcome the opportunity to hear from you again later.
