Internet worms and critical infrastructure: “Internet worms and critical infrastructure”
By Bruce Schneier
“Did MSBlast cause the Aug. 14 blackout? The official analysis says ‘no,’ but I’m not so sure.
A November interim report a panel of government and industry officials issued concluded that the blackout was caused by a series of failures with the chain of events starting at FirstEnergy, a power company in Ohio. A series of human and computer failures then turned a small problem into a major one. And because critical alarm systems failed, workers at FirstEnergy did not stop the cascade, because they did not know what was happening”
– On August 15th I ranted a little about the Blackout of 2003 that occurred on August 14th (click here). In it I said that those responsible (politicians, etc.) should be held responsible. Since then the blackout has been portrayed as an accident and that we should expect it every once in a while. This article shows that it may have been less of an accident and, possibly, more of an act of negligence and incompetance. Let’s go back to my original point. This was preventable and the politicians and power companies should be held responsible. -ed.
