In my opinion, working for myself is far superior to working for someone else. I still have to work hard, but at least I get to reap a bigger chunk of reward for that hard work instead of working to help someone else reap a reward. And therein lies one of the biggest advantages to a home-based business.
One challenge I often face is managing myself. What should I do today? That’s a question I ask myself each morning.
From this, I build my daily ‘To Do’ list. Some things are ‘Must Do Administrative’ items. For example, a tax deadline is coming up and I must work on the tax package to provide to my accountant. Other things are ‘Must Do Business’. These are things relating directly to the business operations such as order fulfillment, attending to customer service issues, etc. For obvious reasons, I must work on these. But, I try to always add a third type of item to my daily To Do list – ‘Business Growth & Planning’. These are things like product and market research, planning press releases, brainstorming ideas, etc.
It’s important for me to include Business Growth & Planning items on daily task lists so that I’ll be always moving toward longer term business goals. If I always just load up my day with ‘Must Do’ tasks, my business will never grow and I’ll end up like a hamster on a wheel – always working and never really making progress.
At the end of the day, I like to say that I accomplished some things that moved my business towards its goals. What about you? How do you ‘manage yourself’ with respect to your business?
