I was reading Fortune Small Business the other day and was reading an article. Or so I thought it was an article. I got down toward the bottom of the page and noticed in the fine print it said “Advertisement”. Ha..fooled me! Yet it was an informative read and I kept on reading.
Maybe you’ve seen those ‘articles’ in magazines that are really just advertisements? Some end up being no better than the full page color ads that we end up ignoring. But the well written ones will get your attention. Why is that?
People read magazines for information – not to look at ads. It’s well known that there will be ads there, but it’s the information they’re after. Therefore, the ads that look and read like information will likely get read and considered.
The same strategy can be used in your home business website, email newsletter, or your home based business blog. If a business is willing to give out incredibly good information for free, then the readers will give you their attention and will probably think something like: well if their free stuff is so good, the stuff they charge for must be really incredible. They’ll be more likely to buy something. Some will buy your product or service out of the sense they owe you something for the wonderful free information (the ‘law of reciprocity’)
So don’t be afraid to give away free content. But in order to leverage that free content, make it high quality content and you will get the returns from that giving.
