Just do something. Please. For a change. Stop thinking and just do it.
I’m running across so many people as of late that are planning to do something. Well that’s great. But planning to do something versus actually doing it are two completely different things.
Between meeting prospective clients, working with clients, reading comments on my blogs, speaking at conferences and interacting with attendees, I hear this resounding chorus of “I’m planning to do it.”
No one ever got ahead by just planning. Sure, it’s great to have goals. And it’s great to have a framework to achieve those goals. But at some point, you have to stop planning and start doing.
THE REAL WORLD RETAILING TAKEAWAY
It’s either fear of the unknown or just plain fear of not knowing that prohibits people from doing.
Is that the issue?
I worked with a great CEO who was famous for saying, “I don’t know but we’ll figure it out.” I love that phrase. It’s like jumping out of the plane without the proverbial parachute. Suicide, right? For most, yes. But for some, they’ll figure out a way to land safely. Maybe they decided to pack an extra parachute after all. Maybe they’ll clip onto a fellow parachutist. Maybe they’ll spot a marshy bog that will make landing like plopping down in a bowl of (not so lumpy) oatmeal. In essence, there are a myriad of options for every situation and you just have to figure out which is best.
The point is that some people jump, and then course correct as they go. And that’s how you get ahead. You just do. And yes, you’ll absolutely make mistakes. But falling forward is so much better than falling on your butt. It’s forward momentum that makes for success. It means you’re tracking toward something. It means you’re making progress. So what if it takes you awhile to get there? It’s better than being stuck at the starting gate, isn’t it?
Get out there! Make something happen today. The sense of accomplishment no matter how small can be the shot of adrenaline you need to get back on track. Retail sales are picking up. Consumer confidence is picking up. The economy is slowly getting back on track. Are you going to lead the resurgence or just wait for it to happen to you?
