American Airlines aims to be the first domestic carrier featuring in-flight internet. The carrier will work with AirCell, who will build cellular towers throughout the continental United States to transmit the signals. Planes will have three antennas, two on the bottom and one on top. This internet service will be tested on American’s Boeing 767-200 planes.
Though the service will most likely be offered at a charge slightly above that of existing Wi-Fi HotSpots. It is also expected to run at DSL speeds.
However, even if you are unwilling to pay for Wi-Fi, American plans to offer free Wi-Fi for sponsored travel websites related to hotels, rental cars, restaurants, etc. American has not yet announced a date for the launch.
