I was reading a press release last week and I thought it did a great job of doing what press releases should do: arousing my curiosity and making me want to know more. Within the press release was a link to submit my email for a free report. I entered my email and waited for my free report.. and waited.
No free report.
I thought maybe I typed my email in wrong or something, so I went back and tried it again. Still no free report (and it didn’t go into my spam folder).
It’s entirely possible that this was an honest error and the auto-sponder was not working. (Auto-sponders should be tested and tested regularly to make sure they DO work). Or it could be the company had no intention of giving any free report and just wanted my email. That would be dark.
Offering something like a free report is a great, low cost way to establish yourself and build a mailing list, while giving people something of value. But please make sure that you deliver what you promise.
