Business is sufficiently scarce in many sectors right now, there is a good chance that most people you do business with will be willing to negotiate. You don’t need to be brutal. That will color business relationships forever afterward. But you do have to let people know, directly or indirectly, what you are willing to pay (or give, or support). I’m reminded of this by a neat post from Kristin Potenti at StartupNation. She says, “Especially in times like these most people are eager for your
business. Therefore learning the art of negotiation is essential.
First and foremost though you have to know what you want.”
Expect the same from some of your customers, and be prepared to put together a deal that works for them and for you. Just go into negotiations knowing what you want.
