Now that I’m back from vacation (picture camping in big sky/big river/big mountain high country) I’m realizing I neglected to list one of the very most important benefits of vacations – they’re fun! But guess what – you get almost none of the benefits of vacation if you bring your electronic gadgets to stay tied to the office. I’m not kidding – an Israeli study found that if you keep in touch with work by using your PDA, cell phone, or email programs, your stress levels hardly go down at all.
So if you’re heading off on a summer vacation in the next two weeks, tell everyone you’re going to be out of touch. Then make good on your promise: Discipline yourself not to check your email, your cell phone or your office voicemail. You (that’s your mind, body, and spirit, that is) deserve a break.
(BTW, I managed to stay off my cell phone — despite new, improved reception in Yosemite — until I had to clarify the logistics of picking up my dog on the way home. And taking a break from electronic communications felt good!)
