The bedroom business is very competitive"?¦er, I am talking about the hotel industry folks, (not the other, probably far more lucrative, bedroom business).
This works to our advantage as business travellers. Not only are there last minute hotel rooms available at lower prices, if you can wait until just before you go, to book a room, but even if you book early there is always the chance of haggling.
Alan Wright in an article titled "Hotels and Haggling´ gave the following example of a phone call to the Miami Hilton to book a room. It says it all:
"Me: How much for a room for one night, tonight?
Reception: We have a room available at $200, sir.
Me: That’s a pity. I’d rather stay with you, but Marriott can do it for $100.
Reception: We can match that, sir.
Me: But theirs is on the Executive Floor.
Reception: As is ours, sir.
Me: (feeling really American) But they’re offering champagne on arrival.
Reception: Sir, you took the words out of mah mouth!"
Ya just gotta have a bit of Chutzpa!
