If you are a mother running a business from home, you probably understand the need to find ways to save money on certain items and materials needed for your business. At this time I use my freelance writing money for my diaper bag company. Eventually I will take out a small business loan, but I´m trying to take out as little as possible beforehand, so I am using what I already have to get as much started as I can. And of course, I am constantly looking for ways to save some money in the process.
This weekend I was talking to another mother business owner. She bought a small press to screen print t-shirts. Her problem? She can´t get customers because she set up a not-s0-great website, yet she doesn´t have the money to hire a professional to fix her website.
And here is the way that networking can save you some money. As you begin to meet other working mothers whom own businesses you´ll find that some of them have a type of business that might offer a service or product you need for your business. In turn, you may have something that the other business needs.
In my case, I can offer website help and design on a small-scale basis and this mother can offer me a reduced price on screen printed shirts as reimbursement for my work on her site. We can work out a deal in trade so that each of us can use our talents to help one another while also saving money for our companies.
If you have not started networking, do so now, even before your company opens. Find other mothers who are running their own businesses. There are many ways to go about this. Join a national organization. Attend seminars and workshops for women in business. Take a class at the local college. Spread the word about your business as you meet other mothers, which gives the other mother an opportunity to share her business with you. Peruse online message boards that relate to the type of work that you are doing from home, or that focus on working mothers/mother business owners/women in business/working parents from home. Not only will you get great advice and suggestions as you set up your business, but you also might be able to work out a trade for certain items. Remember, you are your best form of advertisement, so get out there and network.
