Being inspired every day can be tough. How do you get motivated to grow your business? What makes you make one more phone call to a potential customer or to attend one more meeting where you may meet a potential strategic partner?
This is a situation I see all the time, and hear about from business owners when they want their sales staff more engaged. We know that companies with highly engaged employees outperform companies with less-engaged employees, thanks to many employee surveys over the past eight years or so. When it comes to sales performance, there are simple ways to measure how well an employee is doing – how his or her strengths fit into the profile of a high performer sales team member, and there are ways to best motivate each individual.
How do you do it – you, personally? What I am asking is to find out what gets YOU out of bed, showered, dressed, and off to work with a smile on your face – every day?
You need a vision to look toward that propels you forward. For me this year, I am working on four big goals – some would consider audacious goals – because I have not accomplished any of them before, and they are not simple to do. They are taking work, effort, planning, skill, knowledge, and happen over time. Here is what I do, and I would like to know what YOU do since this is an ongoing conversation with me this year. Please chime in with your thoughts.
I get enough rest so that I’m not cranky. I eat healthy foods and drink lots of water – and some coffee. Yes, people know that I am a coffee nut (or is that a coffee bean?) and I say it is my “only vice.”
Every day, I love what I do. As a small business owner, I have created a business that I enjoy – that I have fun at – and am highly engaged. All does not go well, though – so I am not talking as Susie Sunshine here – things do happen. Clients have an issue, problems can develop.
As a small business owner or sales professional – do you love what you do? Can you stand behind your products and/or services? Do you believe in them?
Next – what are you working for? Are you saving for a new home? A racy new vehicle? College educations for your kids? These can all be very compelling reasons to find a way to solve customer issues and grow sales. You’ve got to have something – especially if it is a bit audacious and possibly a BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal)
There is NO way someone else can MAKE you inspired – they cannot motivate you. Only you can – by how you are crafting your future and then looking at what that future holds.
