Shoplifting, burglaries, and employee theft amount to billions of dollars in yearly losses for retail store managers. By far, the greatest threat comes from shoplifting, which can be combated with the use of electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags. Such tags come in two main varieties, magnetic and those that use radio frequencies. Both kinds attach to the merchandise or package and can be removed or deactivated by the cashier at the time of purchase.
Surveillance systems, such as closed circuit television, also help to prevent various types of theft. These systems come in various forms, including subtle dome cameras. Spy cameras hidden in wall clocks can be used in stockrooms, break rooms, and other back-of-the-store locations to catch internal theft. Finally, it’s also helpful to establish a relationship with your local law enforcement, so they’re aware of your presence in the community and the hours your business is open.
