Performance reviews can be stressful for employees and managers alike. To help minimize your employees’ anxiety, explain the process ahead of time, including how often the reviews occur, how they’re conducted, and what the employee can expect during the discussion. By sharing your proposed conversation agenda ahead of time, the employee will be more confident and more inclined to engage in an honest, productive conversation. If you intend to discuss areas of employee inadequacy, it’ll help to tip them off ahead of time by saying something like “We’ll need to discuss why goals X, Y, and Z weren’t met this year. Please give that some thought so that when we meet we can work together on a solution.”
