Should you create a blog to help you acquire and retain customers? Ask Ron Holt. Ron runs a residential cleaning business in Florida called Two Maids And A Mop. More than a year ago he created a blog to…well, let him tell you in his own words.
I started the blog because I wanted a venue to illustrate our advantages to potential customers. The site is free to maintain, so my only real investment is time. At the time, I felt that it was a great idea because nobody else in our industry was publishing a blog. I felt that the importance of the blog would diminish after our competitors noticed that we had one. That was over one year ago and we still don’t have a single competitor with a blog. In that sense, it’s been a tremendous competitve advantage. So, yes….the investment in the blog has most definitely been worth it. We hear people every week talking about our blog. We also get people from other cleaning companies who ask us questions about their business. In the matter of just over a year, I’ve become known as a leader in the residential cleaning business. Nobody knew my company; much less me back then.
Another useful tool that the blog provides is for SEO. When a customer searches for a cleaning service, we almost always pop up. We’ve got hundreds of little keywords hidden in each blog post. So, we look at the blog as free advertising.
What can a blog do for you that a Web site can’t. For one thing, a blog can make you appear more “human” or personable to current and future customers. Second, it can provide an avenue for rapid feedback from your customers to you as they comment on your posts. Third, it’s easier to update than a Web site.
Don’t have time to post entries? Who said anything about you being the only author. Have a group of employees contribute posts. Want a best practice? See the Southwest Airlines blog for a great example. Sometimes they’re serious, sometimes they’re funny.Sometimes they receive feedback about possible changes (in this case 574 comments).
Start a blog now, before your competitors do.
