We all have just so much mental and physical energy. Sure, this is affected by health, habits, sleep, and diet. We are not created equal when it comes to battery size.
Walk into a Home Depot and buy a drill. You are faced with dozens of choices in a variety of sizes, strengths, and modes of power.
The same is true for people. Think about your spouse/significant other, your friends, your family. Do you see how energy runs the gamut?
Why do I mention this? As managers and leaders, we should not presume to know how much energy and stamina one ought to have. It is better to get to know people and help them find the position and work that is a best match. There is no right or wrong when it comes to battery size – only fit, function, and health.
You too! Be mindful of your battery size and when you are draining your reserves with half the roof still left to be shingled.
BTW – It is my theory that the larger your battery the greater danger you are in for burnout catastrophic draining. Seem counter-intuitive? Who do you think tries to take on too much with a false sense of optimism? Big battery people.
Success is not determined by battery size, but how well you manage and utilize your batteries……
