How much does he like beer? When he’s not taking a swig, he’s putting a lid over his pint glass to protect every precious drop. Well, not a lid exactly. More like a dirty piece of paper that’s been god-knows-where.
Why would he do that? “It’s to stop pints going missing or being collected when you go out for a cigarette or to the toilets,” he says.
But Hartley, who’s more fastidious than your average soccer hooligan, wasn’t content using the grubby beer coasters strewn around his local pub. So he created a special cover, called the Drink Bouncer, that’s designed to fit hermetically over any pub glass. (Who says beer destroys brain cells?)
Each Drink Bouncer carries this message: “I’ll be back in 2 minutes.” The more obvious message, “I’m an anal-retentive nut-job who shouldn’t be allowed in public,” is merely implied.
Hartley insists that England’s no-smoking laws have resulted in half-full glasses being cleared away while customers are outside smoking or taking a leak. He says Drink Bouncer not only keeps customers happy, it also saves pub owners from having to replace those pints for free. (Like an English pub owner would ever do that.)
How exactly does Hartley plan to make money off the Drink Bouncer? By selling advertising space on it, of course. He’s also offering franchise opportunities. Sure, it’s not exactly the same as owning a McDonald’s, but at least Hartley now has a legitimate excuse for spending all his time in the pub.
