Many people do and some people actually make it happen. A recent article from Newsweek (link here) discusses the ins and outs of starting such a business from home. It also discusses the growth pattern in some detail. Such businesses can never remain at home when they grow. There are some pitfalls encountered when trying to build a food business beyond the home (securing a manufacturing facility, marketing the product to a wider market, and so on).
But like anything else, there are success stories. So if you have that marketable recipe, perhaps a home-based food business is in order.
