It’s widely publicized that there’s large movement toward home-based businesses and self employment, particularly among women. Is this just a way of returning to our roots? Leaving the home and family for 8 or more hours a day to work in places away from the home is a social effect that has really only been in place for the past two hundred years or so.
For thousands of years prior to the Industrial Age, people made their livelihoods within earshot of their children and families – often in farming or nomadic roles. Or often the children even helped them. In any case, the idea of making a livelihood within the context of the home front is not new.
Women lead the current home-based business movement and it’s widely acknowledged that many move toward a home-based business model so that can they be close to their young children. Maybe this movement is not so new. Maybe it’s just a way of returning to a place we belong.
Oh and by the way…. for you work-at-home moms (and all other moms) – Happy Mother’s Day!
