Tomorrow is a holiday but it brings to mind some good PR ideas to utilize during the holidays. It’s fourth of July tomorrow, and even though you can’t very well send fireworks to your potential customers and certainly not to any journalists, I encourage you to still think about the holidays and how you can garner PR.
Small businesses sometimes have a nice PR advantage over larger companies because you often serve a very targeted arena.
For next year’s 4th of July for instance, what about sponsoring a float in your annual parade or serving lemonade on the front porch of your business? Hot dogs always go over great too on that day! Hand out balloons, buttons, pencils or a free coupon during the parade. Public relations 101 says the more name recognition the better!
Start putting in place now the funds you can use for doing something to highlight your company and its goodwill during Thanksgiving or Christmas. And by the way, many of the things you might do like donating to a food kitchen, being a blood drive location etc. are also great ways to contribute to your community and help everyone.
And since it’s too late to implement the ideas for this 4th, here are some others you can still use to capitalize on in the dog days of summer. (I’m right outside Austin, so it is 101 and above dog days!)
Let’s look at some summer options. If you’re an air conditioner company for instance, you can during the hottest months of July submit an editorial to your local newspaper titled, “Ten Ways to Keep Your Air Conditioner Bills Low”. Or if you’re a company who specializes in landscaping, perhaps an editorial focused around the heartiest plants in the summer would serve your local news well.
Now more than ever people have access to so much free information on the Web, that one of the key ways as a small business to get their attention is to really meet your readership’s needs on a local and more specialized level.
When you’re a small business the challenge often is how to get your name out there effectively in the public and contributing those small bylined articles is one free way to build up some good PR.
Now go and celebrate your independence! And God Bless America!
