This is the most stressful time of the year for many of us. For me, with three kids “over the line” and two kids “under the line” with respect to Santa Claus, I have to tread carefully and cover my tracks like crazy. Already, my four-year-old spotted a Dumbo dvd in the backseat of my car and asked, “Who is this for?” So I’m stealth-shopping like a maniac while they’re in school – but their winter break starts tomorrow.
So I encourage you to blow off a good hour and a half to two hours later this week, or next week at the absolute latest, and treat yourself to a long holiday lunch with one of your favorite people. Go someplace you don’t normally visit for lunch – here in our office we went down to Brasserie Ten Ten, a wonderful French restaurant, and shot the breeze instead of answering another four hundred email messages. If not now, when?
You had whatever kind of year you had. Did you learn from it? If you’re panting from overwork and wondering how you’ll get it all done in January, you can deal with that after the New Year. If you wish business were stronger, you can brainstorm with your lunch buddy about that. The point is that you have to give yourself a break and just talk and listen, eat and drink. The work, as you have noticed by now, isn’t going anywhere. You can take some time off for yourself. Please do it!
