In what could be a boost both to Borders and AARP, the store and the organization have reached an agreement that will provide selected Borders discounts to AARP members.
The arrangement could cause more people to join AARP, and it could cause more AARP members to choose Borders as their bookstore. It sounds pretty simple: AARP members show their membership card and get a 10-percent discount on paperback books and a 35-percent discount off the list price of AARP-published book titles. Additionally, Borders will become the meeting place for various AARP events.
It is an idea that could be copied by smaller retailers. Perhaps there is an organization in your town with which you could partner to offer in-store events or selected discounts. People aren’t spending much these days; any little bit might help.
