It was interesting to have someone who thoroughly understands the inner-workings of search engines see for the first time how blog platforms are engineered so as to have search engine appeal. Needless to say, Will was impressed.
Coaching him was a joyful experience for me and it helped me rethink why blogs are such search engine magnets. Everything about them has allure for search engines. Let me run through the list:
Post title – Most blog platforms turn the post title into the title tag. Will immediately knew the importance of that as it relates to Google.
Permalink – Each blog post becomes an individual html page, searchable by the engines, with its own unique URL. (Which, btw, contains some of the words from the post title.)
Post body – Will saw the great potential of creating keyword-rich content searchable by the engines.
Comments/Trackbacks – He understands how PageRank works and how these two components could assist in generating a higher rank for a given site.
Categories – This was one area of particular interest. As you may know Technorati uses a “folksonomy” called tags. That particular site looks at blog categories as tags and indexes accordingly.
When we completed the two-hour marathon, Will stated that he had not realized prior to that point how thorough blog platform technology was in its ability to attract attention from search engines. As one who understands SEO he walked away from that session with a new appreciation for blogs and an excitement in developing one of his own.
It kind of got me excited all over again myself!
