By 2015, Heinz plans on reducing its emissions by 20%. They’ve got some really interesting ideas to get there. Potato peels are their first step. After being paired with French fries for generations, all those potato peels are going to be turned into enough bio fuel at their Oregon plant, enough to heat 4000 homes every winter. Heinz is also analyzing their entire distribution network to improve its efficiency, and they’re implementing recycling programs throughout the entire organization.
One of their best ideas is to expand their growing network, so more tomatoes are grown at more locations, so the manufacturing plants can source locally. We’ll all have an even fresher product and tons of carbon dioxide will be saved.
