Hospitals haven’t received a lot of attention in the sustainability news, but the EPA estimates that they use double the energy of a typical office building. In total, American hospitals use 50 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. If hospitals were able to reduce their energy use by 30%, it would be like taking 2 million cars off the road.
The healthcare industry is making efforts though, and Practice Greenhealth has awarded The Premier Healthcare Alliance the 2008 “Champion for Change” award. Premiere is a healthcare purchasing network that represents more then 2,000 hospitals, which have been moving forward with environmental initiatives. They’ compost, recycle, buy organic foods, and install LEDlighting. Premiere is introducing a new Program, SPHERE, that will focus on helping hospitals reduce their energy costs by using renewable sources.
