As readers have reminded me, biking to work is such a grand green way to go. So I have listed a few maintenance tips to keep your bike going well – after all, we want to be fit for work, not late for work.
- Don’t wash your bike as the water flushes the grease out of the bearings and chain. Clean around the chain and rear cluster area with a stiff brush or toothbrush. You can also get bike brushes from bike shops.
- Check wheels for loose parts and keep tire pressure firm. Check tread wear frequently.
- Make sure your brakes are working well and that cables are free of fraying.
- Check your lights are working and don’t forget to service the bike regularly especially if you hear strange scraping sounds. You can do it yourself or most bike shops will happily do it for you.
