The MCS group upgraded its entire 20-story Telecom Tower, in Auckland, to become New Zealand’s first 4 star certified refurbishment. The entire process took 11 months and incorporated some really innovative ideas. Beyond energy efficient lighting and instant hotwater heaters, they’re collecting rainwater for the bathrooms, the old carpets were turned into weed mats for farms, the insulation was re-used in low-cost housing, and they sold the old light fixtures. All in all, they were able to recycle 44,000 tonnes of glass, steel and aluminium.
The project also earned green points for being near public transport and installing electrical consumption gauges throughout the building.
