So many small business owners tell me they have a tough time marketing their business. It’s not hard to market a small business, but it does take plenty of time and effort to get the word out. It’s easy once you get started. They key is using several methods to appeal to your target market.
Consider the small town of Tilden, WI (pop. 1078) that had seen many small businesses fail and farms shut down. They had to do something. So they did. They joined the meadow muffin contest wagon — yep, cow poop. They became the host of the official sanctioned regional cow chip throwing contest and use it as an opportunity to market their town.
And there’s plenty of creativity to go around on the competitive cow chip throwing circuit. Drawing thousands of visitors, one town’s spectators wear black-and-white paper cow masks called chip deflectors.
In another town — Beaver, OK, The Cow Chip Capital of The World — the chamber of commerce sells souvenir belt buckles and shot glasses, along with “I Flung Dung” T-shirts.
So what’s the business lesson here? Use the tools and resources at your fingertips to get the word out about your business. Surely it’s easier to market than, well, cow poop.
