Earlier this month, I posted this blog entry about how watching trends can help give you ideas for your home-based business. Another interesting trend watching tool is Google Trends. The search engine giant continues to roll out interesting products and this one can be a real research assistant for watching trends. Here is a screen shot for the search term ‘home based business’.
It shows a line graph going back to the beginning of 2004 displaying search trends for the search term. It contains tabs for certain ‘events’ that might be of interest to the search term (such as major press releases) which are defined off to the right (not shown). In the lower screen, it shows a news volume trend graph separately.
Keeping an eye on trends for products that you sell (or plan to sell) can help you determine whether your market is growing or shrinking and can give you a leg up in your market. Released in Beta, Google Trends is a terrific little free tool to give you a ‘higher level’ view of trends. The URL for Google Trends is www.google.com/trends
