Recently Google announced a service to allow users to get updated flight arrival/departure inforatmion via SMS from their mobile phones. This is a new feature with Google’s existing SMS information service. If you haven’t used it before it’s somewhat handy. For example, to find pizza near you would send a text message to Google (466453) like “Pizza 94107”. Google would then send back a text message to you with a few pizza places in that zip code. Likewise for flight information I would send my flight’s number to Google like “UA 493”, and Google would send back a text message (or more) with the arrival departure information for United flight 493.
Last weekend I was in the airport and my plane was delayed about 1.5 hours. With nothing better to do, I decided to test the Google flight info service. While it was always prompt in returning info on my flight, it was not accurate. I repeatedly tested the service up until I boarded and it always showed my flight as being on time, rather than delayed. I called the airline’s 1-800 information number, and that information was up to date.
Google SMS is a good service, but probably better suited to pizza at this point.
