The Associated Press reported that online spending at U.S. retailers on Cyber Monday — the Monday following Thanksgiving — jumped 15 percent over the comparable day in 2007.
Unfortunately, even though there were more shoppers, they spent less money. ComScore, the AP source, attributed the drop in dollars per buyer to each buyer completing fewer transactions.
A personal observation about online spending is this: Twice so far this holiday season, I have changed my mind about something I was going to buy because of deals offered by online retailers. In both cases, I completely switched retailers to take advantage of one-day-only free shipping.
Multiply me by thousands of consumers.
Take this personal experience of mine to the bank and give shoppers a reason to shop at your store, online or otherwise. Try one-day free shipping. Consider giving a gift to consumers who spend, say $25.
In the end, most people will buy gifts this month. Their retailers of choice may well be those who offer a break to budget-conscious shoppers. May as well be you.
