In his ebook, Flipping the Funnel, Seth Godin talk about empowering your customers to do your marketing for you. I like reading and hearing Seth because we share some similar philosophies.
One of them is that nobody cares about your business (except you).
Why would anyone care about your business? They have other things filling their days to concern themselves with.
But, give them a reason to remember you, give them a reason to make your business a part of their world, then you’ll have someone you can call a fan.
People care about your business when you do things for them. Or, wen you do things for people or organizations they care about.
When your employees take the time to get to know your customers, that’s doing something for them. When they remember your customer’s names, that’s doing something for them. When you take the time to learn about your customers, show them you’re interested and that you care, that’s doing something for them.
If I get the feeling that, to your business, I’m just a walking dollar sign, then I probably won’t care much about you or what happens to you.
There are only a couple reasons why I would care about your business:
1. We already have a good relationship.
2. Your company does something I want or need that no other company can do as well.
3. Your company does something for someone I care about.
You can send all the money you want telling people how wonderful your company is.
But people won’t even notice.
Unless they care.
In all your marketing, focus on how you’re doing things for people you want to be your customers.
Focus on helping them get what they want. Help them improve their job, their business, their life.
Do this and people will find you. They’ll do business with you. And they’ll tell their friends how wonderful you are.
That’s what I call Smart Marketing!
