Always ask for voice mail — especially if Shirley isn’t giving out Bill’s direct line. Many companies use a voice mail system called Audix, and it’s very easy to use.
Always listen to the entire voice mail. Sometimes Bill will give out his cell phone, unbeknown to Shirley.
After the voice mail is complete dial **6 . It will prompt you to type in the last name and hit # (pound). If the last name doesn’t work, try using the first name. The system will ask you to choose from different names. Always listen to the entire list. Sometimes Bill will have two or more direct lines.
Dial the number that corresponds with Bill. When you’re finished, dial *4. This will prompt you to choose another name. This is useful if you’re looking for other decision-makers within the company, or to get Bill’s second or third direct line.
It is also very easy to move between direct lines. If you get Bill’s voice mail it’s easy to transfer to Bill Junior without having to redial. Simply hit *8. The system will prompt you to dial the extension. Dial the extension and hit # and wait.
Pitch and close.
When Shirley won’t give you Bill’s direct line ask for voice mail. Use Audix or Cisco Unity Messaging Service.
To see if a company is using Cisco Unity Messaging Service, listen to the voice mail and then hit * # and then “4.” This will prompt you to spell the prospect’s last and first name (not always needed); then press #.
Good luck and happy closing.
