If you want to start a blog for your home-based business should you get a free blog or get a blog on your hosted site? Well as in most things, you get what you pay for.
It’s preferable to host the blog on your own site for a variety of reasons. The most notable reason is that you will not be subject to the down times that the large free blog services often have trouble with. Also, your blog (like your business) is a long term commitment and as such should really go on your own site.
What are the technical issues with setting up your own blog on your own site? Well there are some tech issues to deal with and it’s always good if you have a bit of comfort level there. If you feel you’ll need lots of help with your blog setup and other site setup issues, I recommend BlueHost to use for site hosting. I’ve had nothing but great experience with their technical support team over the years and I host several sites there. In addition, their hosting packages come with a lot of free back office plug-ins that will help you with tricky issues (like installing a blog). Don’t expect them to design your site for you, but they will assist you in overcoming those technical hurdles.
If you feel like you just can’t deal with your own site and want to just start out with a free blog, I would recommend a WordPress blog. The reason I recommend this is not just because I think WordPress is an elegant, easy to use blog platform, but that it has an easy migration path for when you decide to move off their free service and onto your own site. WordPress has an easy-to-use export feature which not only serves as a backup system, but also encapsulates your blog data so that you can import it somewhere else and not lose all that content. The WordPress software also installs easily on your own site.
So if you’re considering a blog for your home-based business, but don’t know where to start or can’t decide between a free blog and a blog on a hosted site, I hope this gives you some food for thought.
