I had a conversation a while back with someone about the
changing nature of websites. We talked about static versus dynamic websites and
whether people should even have static websites anymore.
My response was no! Static websites are dead. Here’s
People want more than a brochure.
A static website is essentially a digital brochure. If
you try to do more with a static website you’re pounding nails with a
screwdriver. Web users do not want more ads. They want information, they want
services, they want interaction. They want it fresh, they want it easy and they
want it now. Static websites are lousy at that.
Dynamic websites are easier.
It’s much easier to make a website using dynamic
technologies. In fact, it’s EASIER than making a static website. Plus it can do
more for your visitors. Example: You can use WordPress, a free blogging
platform, to easily create a simple multi-page website that does everything a
static website can do and more. But it’s easier to build and easier to
If your website is lame, people will think your company
is lame too.
I run across old (read 90’s) websites now and then. You
can tell, because a lot of them use the original Microsoft FrontPage templates.
Yuck! They’re the Internet equivalent of driving a rusty, noisy, blue-smoke
belching Ford Pinto.
Most businesses will get an increasing number of new
customers from the Internet in the future. Why turn them off with an ugly,
do-nothing website? What they think of your website they will also think of your
business. A modern, dynamic website can make a great first impression on your
new Internet-savvy customers.
Your website should serve your organization by serving
The only reason for a business to have a website is to
attract new customers and to serve existing customers. A static website will do
a lousy job at these tasks. People expect information, they expect ease of use
and they expect your website to represent everything your business has to offer
them. They want your website to help them make an informed decision and then
assist them in their purchase and service after the sale, if at all possible.
Show me a static website that does this as good as a
dynamic, database-driven website for the same money and time. I won’t hold my
breath because it does not exist.
