Here’s a creative way to get people to notice your business.
Yesterday I read about a store that sells outdoor cooking gear like gas grills and such. During the warm weather months they setup grills outside the store and start cooking. All day long the people shopping in that area are subjected to that familiar smell of outdoor grilling.
I can envision people stopping what they’re doing and walking into the store as if led by an invisible and irresistible force.
What a great way to get people’s attention! And it’s instructional for any of us who want to improve our local marketing.
They are tapping into a part of people’s awareness that other businesses are not. We’re all exposed to thousands of messages daily but most hit us through our ears and eyes. Very few marketing messages come in through our noses.
Plus, our sense of smell is powerfully linked to memory, both past and future. When we walk by this store and smell the grilled food cooking it elicits our own fond memories of similar activities. And it places this event in our future memory banks. We might find next time we smell outdoor grilling, we think of this little store.
I like this because it’s different and because it plays to a strength. When you’re promtoing your business (or any organization) you need to put your best foot forward if you want to win the competition for people attention (and their buying habits). This story has devised a good way to do just that.
Kudos to the staff at this outdoor cooking store!
